Tea for Two: Hanging out with Ghosts

Last evening, I visited a house that the owners believe they share with a few ghosts. The owners were out-of-town and had generously given me permission along with a key to enter their house. I arrived at 9:30 pm and stayed until well after midnight. After lighting candles and leaving them in the parlor where I felt the activity (energy) was strongest, I set off with my camera on a tour of the house.

The lantern on the table began to swing back and forth.

The lantern on the table began to swing back and forth.

The house is gorgeous, well over 100 years old, with creaky wooden staircases and lots of hallways for ghosts to ramble about. It’s a perfect setting for them!  I was busy taking photos in the upstairs hallway when a lantern on the hall table began to swing back and forth on its stand. I tested the floorboards around the table, thinking perhaps that I had stepped on a loose board that triggered the swinging, but found nothing. Despite many attempts, I was not able to make the lantern swing on its own again.

Downstairs, I made a thermos of tea and poured some into a cup which I set on a side table in the parlor. The cup was meant to be an invitation for any ghosts who wanted to join me for tea! I settled into a chair close by with my thermos of tea and a book, and began to read. It wasn’t long before I felt I was being observed. You know that feeling…when someone is staring at you and you feel compelled to look up.

I put the book aside and spoke out loud, inviting any spirits who were present to make them selves known. It wasn’t long before I felt cold air in front of me and my body began to shiver as my feet turned ice-cold. One of the spirits was examining me up close and I sat very still. The cold air dissipated after about 15 seconds and then I got a strong whiff of tobacco. That, too, disappeared and was replaced with the strong fragrance of roses. It was clear to me that there were three spirits in the room and they were taking turns examining me up close.

One of the ladies…I believe there was one man and two women…telepathically communicated to me that she “was nobody’s maid” and that her name was “Maude.” It seems that the owners of the house had been referring to her as “the maid” and she wanted to set the record straight. I often receive an impression when spirits communicate with me and fortunately I was able to ‘see’ Maude clearly. A very prim and proper woman in a white blouse with a round, high collar, puffy sleeves, and long skirt. Her hair was  streaked grey and pinned up and her face was thin and bony, with thick eyebrows (in need of a plucking!). After this communication, the three spirits were quiet. The only evidence they gave of their presence during the remainder of my visit was a sound like a “hiccup”. I heard this hiccup three separate times.

I got the feeling, as I always do when visiting a place occupied by spirits, that they are as curious about us as we are about them. This group seemed friendly and quite happy to have a visitor show up. This isn’t always the case. Spirits can be quite demanding as you will find out in the days ahead as I share my ‘ghost’ stories with you.

Until the next time…happy ghost haunting!
